Watch provenance certificate

Provenance is the documented history of a watch: where it came from and who has had it since. A provenance certificate puts that history in a form a buyer can check.

What a good provenance record shows

A useful record shows when the watch was first registered, each change of owner, the servicing it has had and by whom, and whether it has ever been reported lost or stolen. The more of these are recorded as they happen, the more weight the record carries.

A paper certificate can be copied or altered. A digital record that is written to a tamper-evident ledger, as TIMEVAULT® does, makes after-the-fact changes visible.

What TIMEVAULT® records

Registration, ownership transfers, service records with their own certificates, insurance, and loss reports each become part of the watch's provenance timeline, in date order, starting at registration.

The record shows what was declared and what was independently confirmed, so a buyer can tell the difference. A Trust Score out of 100 summarises the evidence, and shows its sources.

Provenance is evidence, not a guarantee

A provenance record cannot make a watch genuine. It shows what is on record and who put it there. For a high-value purchase, it works best alongside an inspection by a qualified watchmaker.

Questions

What is a watch provenance certificate?

It is a document or digital record that sets out the history of one watch: its origin, its owners, and its servicing. It helps a buyer judge whether the story behind the watch is complete.

Is a digital provenance certificate better than a paper one?

Paper can be lost or altered. A digital record kept on a tamper-evident ledger is easier to check and harder to change unnoticed, and it can be handed to the next owner in full.

Can I get a provenance record for a watch I already own?

Yes. You register the watch, and its provenance timeline starts from the date of registration. Service partners can then add its earlier services as dated notes.

Does a provenance record prove a watch is authentic?

No. It documents what is on record. Authenticity is best confirmed by a qualified watchmaker or the manufacturer, and a service partner's authenticity check can be added to the record.
